Gerresheimer has signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with PNE, for around 35GWh annually from German wind farms. It will run from 2024.
The supplier to the pharma, biotech and cosmetics industries is aiming to switch its entire electricity supply to renewable sources by 2030.
Its CEO, Dietmar Siemssen, said: “The power purchase agreement with PNE is another important building block in expanding green power as a share of the supply of energy to our German locations.”
Gerresheimer’s glass production locations in Essen, Lohr and Tettau will benefit from the PPA, as will its medical systems production sites in Bünde, Pfreimd and Wackersdorf.
It follows the June 2023 signing by Gerresheimer, of a PPA with the operator of a wind-solar hybrid plant in India.
Markus Lesser, CEO of PNE, noted the “growing interest from industrial companies in PPAs with higher volumes and longer terms.”
He added: “We are noticing that the industry is increasingly preferring to purchase electricity from wind power regionally, whereas a few years ago it was electricity from PV systems or even just green electricity certificates from Norway. There is a noticeable change here.”
